5 Extremely Simple Tips for Choosing the Right Travel Mug

Buying a travel mug seems like it should be easy, right? It’s just a mug. You grab one that looks decent, toss your coffee in it, and go on with your day.

But if you’re someone who treats their morning coffee (or tea) like a sacred ritual, there’s a little more to it than that. The right travel mug can be the difference between a happy, caffeinated commute and a lukewarm disaster.

So, before you impulse-buy the first cute mug you see, here are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind.

1. Steel > Plastic. Always.

If you’re serious about keeping your drink hot (or cold), stainless steel is the way to go. Plastic mugs might be cheaper, but they don’t hold up nearly as well. They’re more prone to cracking, and over time, they’ll start to absorb odors and stains no matter how hard you scrub.

Steel, on the other hand, is sturdy, easier to clean, and way better at keeping your drink at the right temperature. Bonus points if you get one that’s double-walled or vacuum-insulated—it’ll keep your drink warm for hours, not just an hour.

If you’re stuck with plastic (maybe you got one as a gift), at least look for one with a stainless steel lining inside. It’ll save you from that dreaded “old coffee” smell lingering in your mug forever.

2. Make Sure It’ll Actually Fit Where You Need It

Before you buy, think about where you’ll be using this mug. Does it need to fit in your car’s cupholder? Will it be living on your desk next to a curious cat or an overly expressive coworker who can’t talk without waving their arms around?

If you’re taking it on the go, check the dimensions and make sure it won’t topple over every time you hit a bump. Look for mugs with a non-slip base or a rubber grip on the bottom—trust me, they’re lifesavers in a moving car (or a chaotic office).

3. The Lid Is More Important Than You Think

You’d be surprised how many perfectly good mugs are ruined by a lousy lid. For daily use, a screw-on lid is your best bet. Snap-on lids can pop off too easily, and no one wants to deal with a coffee flood in the middle of their workday.

As for the drinking hole, you’ll see options like sliders, flaps, or flip-tops. That’s more of a personal preference—go with whatever feels the most comfortable (and leak-proof) for you.

4. Size Matters (Obviously)

This one’s simple. If you’re someone who needs a gallon of caffeine to function, go for a 16 oz or even 20 oz tumbler. If you’re more of a casual sipper, an 8 or 12 oz mug will do the trick.

Just remember: the bigger the mug, the more careful you’ll need to be with cup holders and bag space.

5. Let It Show Some Personality

A travel mug doesn’t have to be boring. These days, you can personalize them with everything from motivational quotes to your favorite meme. (I have one of the personalized name mugs pictured above.) Some people even get their own faces printed on theirs (no judgment).

Whether you want something sleek and minimal or a mug that makes a statement, there’s no shortage of options out there. You can even find custom designs online if you want to add a little personal flair.

Whew! Never imagined there would be these many things to consider before buying a travel mug. But now that you do, it’s going to take a lot to actually pick the wrong one. Happy shopping!
